REHAB CENTRE A Shelter for Ex-Prisoners   VISION The overall goal of the project is to develop livable communities through the provision of:   1. Decent and available shelter 2. Supporting emotionally 3. Creating suitable living environments 4. Expanding economic opportunities 5. Preventing and eliminating re-offending

 

Beneficiaries:
Prisoners, Ex-prisoners & their families under classification as Ex offenders, released juveniles, drug dependent and dually diagnosed, orphans, AIDS afflicted and socially ostracized.

Project Components:
a) Boarding and Lodging; b) Health Care; c) Education; d) Vocational Training; e) Psychological Services; f) Placement Support; g) Moral Instructions; h) After Care Services.

Objectives:
To provide released Prisoners and Young offenders with facilities like short stay, Food, medical aid, education, skill training and placement assistance in order to facilitate their transition from incarceration to community life, bearing in mind holistic care.

To help the residents to reintegrate into society by improving their interpersonal relationships and restoring their self-esteem and confidence, forgiving & forbearance.

To facilitate the rehabilitation of residents and their subsequent reintegration into the society through fostering rapport between residents, their families and the society, through reconciliation & restitution.

To help residents to lead a law abiding and industrious life with correction & Supportive welfare.

To prepare ex-offenders to face the challenges and demands to be expected on their return to the community, with much needed counseling & guidance.

To improve their institutional adjustment and general mental health as well as to change their offending behavior, with the love of GOD.

To build adequate and appropriate skills to facilitate their smooth reintegration into the community, networking with NGO.

To assist offenders, released offenders and their dependents to obtain suitable employment and to provide them with the opportunity for training and retraining to that end, as to they would continue to live as good citizens & endure honestly.

To generate and increase the level of community awareness of the causes of crime, the need for community participation in the rehabilitation of ex-offenders and the specific needs of their families and dependents, presenting the reformed to testify of the cleansing of heart and mind in awareness programs.

To cooperate with the relevant Government bodies and other agencies for the furtherance of these aims and objectives.

 

Need & Relevency

Since the major contrubuting factor to the soaring rates of crime and recidivism is the inability of former convicted offenders to get their lives restarted upon release. Participants have an average primary level education; nearly a third are illiterate. In addition to their addictions remaining untreated, many former offenders upon release are unable to find gainful employment and reestablish a functional family environment. Dependence on welfare systems, relapse into substance abuse and a return to criminal activities are common results. In the year 2004 Prison Fellowship India - Karnataka Committee, Bangalore put up the Project entitled "Rehab Centre", under the principle that violence, if preventable, should be a public health issue. Through the community building and direct service provision for the needs of former offenders in breaking their repetitive cycle of drugs, criminal behaviours and violence, goal is to reduce crime without doing further harm. Rehab Centre operates with a dedicated staff - some of whom are former offenders, and provides an integrated service delivery network extensively enhanced by the community-building model.

 

Out-come

The outcome for the Project has so far been considerable as it could inculcate improved self esteem and self confidence in their own abilities and future prospects; a greater commitment to learn or work other than simply relying on hand-outs; and a greater inclusion in their feeling of belonging to society on reintegration. It is premature to comment on the reduction in re-offending that this project may have contributed to, as we are still around 15 years in existence had been doing Rehabilitation at various means & different ways and now exclusively but, Our experience however short it may be, indicates that we have enabled the residents to identify other options for their life other than re-offending.

 

Project Evaluation

Evaluation incorporates a plan that tracks how fast the inmates get reintegrated into the community and how many of them are able to set up independent carrier / employment and whether they are less likely to commit new offences. These outcome data can be crucial not only to evaluate the program strengths and identify the areas of program operations that need improvement but also helpful to persuade funding sources to continue to support the program.
